How to use the day counter
- Enter the start date and the end date. If you enter them the wrong way round, the counter swaps them and tells you.
- Decide whether the end date counts. Count it for periods where both days are used, such as a course or a trip; leave it out for elapsed time.
- Choose all days or weekdays only.
- Read the total, the weeks-and-days breakdown and the other counts underneath.
Day counting formula
Weeks = ⌊days ÷ 7⌋ · remaining days = days mod 7
Weekdays = days in the range that fall Monday to Friday
Each date is turned into a day number, a running count of days in the Gregorian calendar, so subtracting two of them gives the gap directly with every month length and leap day taken into account. Without the end date, the count is the number of midnights you pass between the two dates; with it, it is the number of calendar dates you touch. Weekdays are counted in whole weeks of five and then day by day for the part-week at the end.
Worked example
A school term runs from Monday, March 2, 2026 to Friday, June 19, 2026. The dates are 109 days apart. Because the first and last days are both school days, count the end date too: 110 days, which is 15 weeks and 5 days. Of those, 80 are weekdays and 30 fall on weekends. Subtract any holidays in the term to get teaching days.
Day of the year on the 1st of each month

Counting tips
- Nights vs days. A stay from Friday to Sunday is 2 nights (end date not counted) but touches 3 days (end date counted).
- "Within 30 days" and "30 days later" are different. Thirty days after October 19, 2026 is November 18; the 30 days that include October 19 end on November 17.
- Working days need holidays removed. The weekdays-only option skips Saturdays and Sundays, but every country and employer has its own public holidays.
- Long ranges are fine. Any dates from year 1 to 9999 work, using the Gregorian calendar throughout.
To find the date a number of days from now, use the date calculator; for exact times as well as dates, the time duration calculator; and for ages, the age calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How many days are there between two dates?
Subtract the earlier date from the later one. From January 1 to December 31, 2026 is 364 days. If you count both the first and the last day, as you would for the length of a year or a festival, add one: 365 days.
Should I include the end date?
Include it when both days are part of the period, such as a holiday, a course or an event: Monday, October 19 to Friday, October 23, 2026 is 5 days with the end date. Leave it out for elapsed time, such as how long ago something happened: the same dates are 4 days apart.
How many weekdays are there in 2026?
From January 1 to December 31, 2026, counting both dates, there are 261 weekdays (Monday to Friday) and 104 weekend days. Public holidays are not removed, so subtract the ones that apply to you to get working days.
How do I convert days into weeks?
Divide by 7: the whole number is the weeks and the remainder is the extra days. 100 days is 14 weeks and 2 days, and 364 days is exactly 52 weeks. The day counter shows this breakdown for every result.
How many days are left until a date?
Enter today as the start date and the future date as the end date, and leave the end date not counted. The answer is the number of days to go; on the day before the event, it shows 1.
