A typical order of work

  1. Drywall: hang, tape and finish the walls and ceiling.
  2. Prime and paint walls and ceilings while the floor is still bare.
  3. Tile and flooring: lay the floor once the messy work is done.
  4. Trim: fit baseboards last, which also hides the expansion gap that floating floors need at the walls.

Buying tips for finishes

  • Allow for the pattern. Straight layouts typically need about 10% extra; diagonal and herringbone layouts need 15–20% because of the angled cuts.
  • Check batch numbers. Tile and flooring can vary in shade between production runs. Buy everything at once and check that the boxes match.
  • Keep a spare box. A few leftover tiles or planks make future repairs invisible.
  • Read the box. Coverage per box, recommended trowel size and grout joint width are printed on the packaging; use those figures in the calculators.
