The range uses the WHO/CDC adult BMI categories, for adults 20 and over. BMI is a screening measure: it doesn’t separate muscle from fat, so it is a starting point rather than a verdict.

This is an estimate from a published formula, not medical advice. Talk to a doctor or registered dietitian about your own situation.

How to use the healthy weight calculator

  1. Enter your height in feet and inches, or switch to metric for centimeters.
  2. Optionally enter your current weight to see your BMI and the distance from the range.
  3. Use the table under the results to see the range at other heights; your height is marked.

Healthy weight formula

Lower end = 18.5 × height (m)²
Upper end = 24.9 × height (m)²
In pounds: weight (lb) = BMI × height (in)² ÷ 703.07

The range comes straight from the adult BMI categories used by the World Health Organization and the CDC, where 18.5 to 24.9 is "healthy weight". Turning BMI round to solve for weight gives the two ends. Because height is squared, the range widens as height increases: about 32 lb at 5 feet but about 48 lb at 6 ft 2 in. To keep every weight shown inside the range, the calculator rounds the lower end up and the upper end down.

Worked example

At 5 ft 7 in (67 in, 170.2 cm), the healthy range is 18.5 × 67² ÷ 703.07 to 24.9 × 67² ÷ 703.07, or 119–158 lb. Someone of that height who weighs 185 lb has a BMI of 29 and is 26 lb above the exact upper end of 158.98 lb. In metric, 170 cm gives 53.5–71.9 kg.

Making sense of the range

  • It is a wide band on purpose. People of the same height differ in frame, muscle and bone, and many weights are compatible with good health.
  • Waist size adds context. Two people at the same weight can carry fat differently. The overweight calculator adds waist-to-height ratio.
  • Small changes count. For people above the range, health guidance generally focuses on steady, sustainable changes rather than reaching a single number.
  • Below the range matters too. A weight under the lower end can be a sign of undernutrition or another condition worth discussing with a doctor.
  • Children are different. For ages 2 to 19, use the percentiles in the BMI calculator.

For formula-based reference weights, see the ideal weight calculator. This is not medical advice; talk to a doctor or registered dietitian.

Frequently asked questions

What is a healthy weight for my height?

For adults, a healthy weight is one that gives a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9. Multiply your height in meters squared by 18.5 and by 24.9 to get the range. At 5 ft 7 in that is about 119 to 158 lb; at 170 cm it is about 53.5 to 71.9 kg.

What is a healthy weight for a 5 ft 4 in woman?

About 108 to 145 lb. The adult BMI range is the same for women and men, so a 5 ft 4 in man has the same healthy range.

What is a healthy weight for a 6 ft man?

About 137 to 183 lb, the weights that give a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 at 6 ft (72 in). The middle of the range, a BMI of 21.7, is 160 lb.

How far am I from a healthy weight?

Compare your weight with the ends of the range. Someone 5 ft 7 in tall who weighs 185 lb is about 26 lb above the top of the range (BMI 24.9 is 159.0 lb at that height), with a BMI of 29. The calculator does this subtraction for you.

Is the healthy weight range the same for everyone?

It is the same for all adults aged 20 and over, but it is only a screening guide. It does not account for muscle, frame or where fat is carried, and UK guidance uses lower BMI thresholds for some ethnic groups. Children and teens are assessed with age-specific percentiles instead.
